"The ‘simply’ DVDs have enabled Steven to learn at his own pace without the distraction of other pupils or the insecurity of not understanding tasks burdening him"

Dear Student Support Centre,

I would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff involved with The Student Support ‘simply’ programmes. It has helped my youngest son Steven tremendously with his confidence with both English and in particular maths. This was a massive cause for concern for me when I received the letter regarding your course 2 years ago.

Steven is severely dyslexic and has always struggled with maths, reading and writing. He left Primary School just under 2 years ago. Sadly he was unable to sit his SATs in Maths and English as his ability was so poor that it was felt he would be unable to obtain a grade. However, he did sit his Science test with the aid of both a scribe and a reader. He managed to score a result of level 4 which I am immensely proud of.

When Steven left the Primary School his ability was so poor that he wasn't able to tell the time, he could only do his 2, 5 and 10 times tables. He couldn't count accurately above 40. Addition and subtraction was limited to 1 digit sums. This was of no fault to the school - he just found it all too hard and year after year he fell further and further behind despite having a tremendous amount of classroom support. He was just not able to work at the pace the lessons went at.

It was during his periods of absence that The Student Support ‘simply’ DVDs well and truly came into their own. I was determined that Steven should not fall even further behind. So we continued his numeracy education at home - all be it with rather a lot of outbursts of "I can't do I'm too thick" from Steven. However, with a lot of patience and persuasion we did slowly get through Part 1 of the ‘simply’ maths programme.

Steven can now tell the time in both analogue and digital, he can even tell the time using roman numerals. This time last year he was unable to do either. We are currently learning his 6 times tables. His addition and subtraction has been totally transformed.

On one particular Friday morning at the beginning of last year Steven was unable to go to school, I suggested we should have a go at the test for addition on the ‘simply’ programme. We had watched the lesson several times and I thought Steven could possibly be able to answer the questions. At first he slowly started to get what he should do and then it all escaped him. We had a break and came back to it after much huffing and puffing and "I cant' do it" statements.

We sat down with the number cards and started again to add the units and then the tens. This time he got 1 right then another and then another. He started to feel a bit more confident and I continued to encourage him greatly as I didn't want him to give up just as he started to grasp it. After he got a few more questions right, he all of a sudden and quite literally, had a light of understanding shine in his eyes and I could see the weight of confusion lift from his shoulders. He could understand what he had to do!

We have had many moments like that and each one is as special as the last. The ‘simply’ DVDs have enabled Steven to learn at his own pace without the distraction of other pupils or the insecurity of not understanding tasks burdening him. I am able to pause the lesson at any time and explain to Steven in his own language what is happening. He has now started Part 2 of the ‘simply’ programme. If his achievements in the next 2 years are that of the last 2, I am sure that he should be in a good position to be able to take his GCSE'S.

Two years ago I was fearful for his future. I attribute a considerable amount of his improvement in both his confidence and ability to The Student Support Centre. It does as it says, it lets children learn at their own pace in the privacy of their own home. I hope that you continue to help these children and parents in the same way that you have with us.

Thank you from all of us.

Clare, Richard and Steven Wright
