Your Turn to Teach

Peacock Facts, by Srenivash (13) Middlesex. Did you know that the male peacock has an extravagant tail which he uses to attract the female peacock?Did you know that the male peacock has an extravagant tail which he uses to attract the female peacock?

Peacocks were very important to the Ancient Greeks. This is because, according to Greek myths, Hera put the hundred eyes of her favourite guards on her favourite animal’s (peacock) tail so that her guards would not be forgotten.

Peacocks dance when they are happy. This is why they dance when it is going to rain.

Other peacock facts:

  • The male is called a peacock and the female is called a peahen (you may also hear the female referred to as a 'peacock' or 'female peacock').
  • The male peacock has an extravagant tail which he uses to attract the female peacock
  • The female is brown or toned grey and brown
  • A baby peacock is called a peachick
  • There are two species of peacocks: Indian Peafowl and Green Peafowl
