Nocturnal Animals
Congratulations to Josh!
We've had such a great response and it was hard to choose between all the fantastic entries for this issue.
We love to read about all the different topics you've been learning about in school and at home. You can send in anything you think your fellow Pass Masters students might find interesting!
Well done to Josh who sent in his 'Turn to Teach' contribution. Josh will shortly receive a fabulous £10 WHSmith voucher!
Your turn to teach
Nocturnal Animals In My Woods, by Josh (7), London.
We have woods at the back of our garden and these are some of the animals living there.
The Badger
Badgers are black and white. They are nocturnal which means they sleep in the day and wake up at night to eat. Badgers live for about 10 years and live in groups and have a home in the ground which is called a set.
Badgers eat animals and plants. Badgers come into my garden and look for worms. They make a mess of our grass and my mum and dad get angry.
Bats
Bats are very small and fly really fast. At night we sit and watch the bats flying around the trees and swooping down on the grass in our garden. It is very scary because they come close to us.
Bats are awake at night and sleep during the day hanging upside-down.
Frogs
Frogs lay really little eggs and tadpoles come out of them. When the tadpoles get bigger their tails get smaller and they grow legs.
We collect frogs in our garden and put them in buckets and take them to the woods to find them a nice shady home. Sometimes my brother and I carry them into the woods. I am scared of carrying them because they are all slimy and they jump about and it tickles a lot.
The Mouse
A mouse is small and fury and has a long tail that looks like a worm. They live for 6 years. Mice live in nests and are nocturnal. They eat lots of different things like seeds, fruit, small animals like worms, grasshoppers and cheese.
We have mice in our house but my mum and dad don’t like them and put traps down to catch them and then we take them into the woods to find a new home.
Owls
Owls are meat-eaters and hunt for food at night. They find food in the dark using their eyes and ears to see and listen. Owls eat mice, insects, frogs, and birds.
We have owls in our woods. When we go to bed or wake up early in the morning we can hear them. We have never seen the owls.
Fox
Foxes are meat-eaters. They are nocturnal. They hunt mostly at night. Foxes eat mice, insects, frogs, grass, berries and nuts.
Foxes come into our garden a lot. They are clever at jumping over our fence.
Hedgehog
The hedgehog is small and has spiky spines on its body.
Hedgehogs eat beetles, snails, eggs, insects and some plants. They poke their nose into the dirt to look for food.
My aunt lives in Devon and she has a family of hedgehogs that she feeds every night in her garden. I have seen lots of pictures of them and would really like to feed them with her.
