Learn how to make a Chinese lantern

Red Chinese LanternRed Chinese Lantern On the fifteenth and final day of Chinese New Year, there is a lantern festival. People celebrate by making beautiful lanterns (paper balloons, sometimes with lights inside) and walking them through the streets.

Why not make your own Chinese lantern for the Chinese New Year?

Important: Make sure your parent or adult carer helps you carry out this task from start to end.

You will need: Chinese New YearChinese New Year

  • A large, rectangular piece of paper (red is best, but any colour is fine)
  • Scissors (ask your parent or adult carer for help with these)
  • Sticky tape
  • A piece of string

Now you should have everything you need, so let's get started!

  • Step 1 - Fold your piece of paper in half, so you have a long, thin rectangle.
  • Step 2 - From the folded edge, ask your parent or adult carer to make cuts upwards from one end to the other, but don’t cut all the way to the other side.
  • Step 3 - Unfold the paper and roll into a cylinder shape. Tape the cylinder together with sticky tape.
  • Step 4 - Tape string to the top to use as a handle. Well done! You have your own lantern!
  • Step 5 - Don't forget to ask your parent or adult carer to help you find a suitable place to hang your lantern!

We’d love to see your final piece of art so why don't you send us a photo or drawing of your finished lantern and maybe it will be featured in the next issue of Pass Masters!

Have fun!
