Send a secret message to your loved one this Valentine's Day!
Every year on the 14th of February, people give cards and gifts to show the people they love how much they care about them. This special day is called Valentine’s Day. You can tell someone you love them on Valentine’s Day by giving a card, writing a poem or remembering to say ‘I love you’.
The Story of Valentine’s Day
There are many stories about how Valentine’s Day came about. The most famous says that years ago, an emperor told the young men in his army that they must not marry. He believed that men without wives made better soldiers. A priest called Valentine helped the young men to marry their sweethearts, so the emperor put him in prison. From his prison cell, Valentine sent a card to his own sweetheart. He signed it ‘Your Valentine’. From that day on, people celebrated ‘Valentine’s Day’ as a special time to send cards to loved ones.

How to make a Valentine’s Day Card
Send your Valentine's Day card to Pass Masters for a chance to win a prize!
Why don’t you make your own Valentine’s card and give it to someone you love on Valentine’s Day? Some people send secret cards to people on Valentine’s Day. Instead of writing their name inside, they write ‘love, your Valentine’. If you want to give someone a surprise, why not send a secret card and let your loved one guess who sent it?
Important: Make sure your parent or adult carer helps you carry out this task from start to end.
You will need:
- A large rectangular piece of card, either pink or white
- A pencil
- Glue (preferably a glue stick)
- Red or silver glitter
- Newspaper
- A flower (ask a guardian or your adult carer to help you find one (that won’t be missed) in the garden or park)
- An old phonebook
- A plate
- Microwave-safe kitchen paper
- An envelope
To make your special flower:
Step 1 - Squash your flower in the middle of an old phonebook and leave for two days.
Step 2 - Ask your guardian or adult carer to put the flower onto a sheet of kitchen paper and into the microwave, cover with a plate and microwave for 3-4 minutes. Always ask a guardian or your adult carer to help you use the microwave. If you don’t have a microwave, you’ll need to leave the flower in the phonebook for two weeks to dry it out.
To make your Valentine’s card:
Step 1 - Spread out the newspaper to keep your table clean from glue and glitter.
Step 2 - Fold the card in half to make a ‘card’ shape, like a birthday card.
Step 3 - On the front of your card, draw a big heart shape with your pencil.
Step 4 - With your glue stick, fill in the heart shape with glue and sprinkle the glue with glitter.
Step 5 - Press the glitter in with your fingers, then tip the unstuck glitter onto the newspaper.
Step 6 - Stand your card up to dry.
Step 7 - Carefully fold the newspaper around the glitter and put the whole lot in the bin.
Step 8 - Write your special Valentine’s Day message inside your card, then put your pressed flower inside and seal everything in an envelope.
